A good example of succession is when a new island arises from volcanic activity in the ocean. This is a piece of land that has never supported life (basically a solid chunk of rock). The first things to colonize the island might be things like bacteria, fungi, moss, and lichen (things that are wind dispersed or wash up on shore from the ocean). As these things die, they slowly build up an organic soil layer. Once soil is form, vascular plants can begin to establish. These plants can now support insects and other animals. Eventually woody plants, like shrubs and then trees will become dominant. The final stage of succession is a climax (old growth) forest! This is a simple example of primary succession.

Before everyone posts answers on here chastising me for circising my son please read this all. I am not doing it for cosmetic or religious reasons. I would not be having it done if not for a medical need. He has a condition in which he has a tight chordae and phimosis. According to the urologist if this is not fixed, his will be pulled downward and his urethra could be closed off leaving him unable to urinate. I know that there is large debate over infant phimosis because it is often incorrectly diagnosed but he said that my son definitely has it and that it does exist. The fact that it has been misdiagnosed so often leads to people who do not know the facts thinking that there is no such thing. If you have heard that please be aware that this is a textbook case of phimosis diagnosed by the best pediatric urologist that I could find. I am wondering about the cost because my insurance company will not pay anything so I am stuck with paying for this surgery out of pocket. My insurance would have paid for it if we had it done immediately but since this will take place after his initial discharge they don't care that it is medically necessary. That is messed up in my opinion - they would have paid for his circision when it was a cosmetic or religious choice but they won't pay for a medically necessary procedure. And here I thought I had HEALTH insurance! I must have something posing as health insurance that bases coverage on age rather than necessity. Anyhow my son will be put under general anesthesia and will have to stay in the hospital for about 4 hours thereafter. The urologist said his part would be around $500.00. Does anyone know (ballpark) what a room for a half a day and general anesthesia would cost.

I think you need to reduce your intake on caffeine lets say from 4 cups of coffee to 2 cups of coffee/redbull whatever it is you do. caffeine can make a person become very anxious and cause them to lose focus because they are so jacked up. I know you said it helps you concentrate but its not really suppose to help you concentrate, it is suppose to help you stay awake... just get more sleep and take less caffeine and see if that works... also I thought most colleges have student services where they can let you talk to doctors since they already charge you in your tuition. I wouldn't if you have any kind of heart problems. With clippers you're going to be straining a lot and that could put a lot of stress on you. Other than that, if you're in decent shape I'd say you could handle SMALL plants/trees. I actually just did some of that recently and it wasn't too bad. Just don't "overextend" and try to do more than you think you can handle; I eventually had to stop MYSELF because I tried cutting down a tree that was just too wide for my own clippers! i would think that since you know your dog better than your vet does, no matter how much schooling he has had, he would at least listen to your concerns and give them some sort of weight in his diagnosis and examination. i suggest you find a vet that not only cares about your animal but sees you and your concerns as an important part in the treatment. your dog can't speak for herself, you can speak for her, find a vet who will listen to you. does that make sense?

What are the strange bruise like marks around my neck?

About a month ago my family and I noticed a strange mark around my neck that looked like a bruise. It is not a hickey and I've gotten that enough times. It does not hurt like a bruise nor change pigment when poked. It goes perfectly around the front side of my neck fading in the middle and darker on the sides, also it is perfectly flat on the sides. It is about an inch from where I grow facial hair and an inch above where a lot of my shirt lines are. Also a few large pimples broke out and I have never gotten them in that area before. I don't tan very often, I wear a shirt to bed about every other day, I don't wear a necklace. I'm 20 5'10 255lb not obese. I am a male 22 year old undergrad student from Boston and I am taking a government job in Arlington for 6 months from Jan-June. I didnt give her a bottle in the hospital and they told me to wait a couple weeks until feeding was established before trying a bottle (i wanted to do both - bottle and ). If you do really well on that and your SAT IIs, I would say you should apply to the Ivy Leagues and maybe a couple of safety schools. BIG QUESTION. I have a week to get a flat stomach! Help!?

I'm going to Holland in a week and I am having difficulty with my weight. I had anorexia about a year ago and I've physically recovered however I feel like i'm putting on weight that i've lost. I obviously am because my mum keeps bringing up how much weight i've put on and that i'm becoming a lot more 'chunky' than I was before. Its hurting my feelings and I don't want to talk to her about it because she's not one of those kind of mums. I generally eat pretty healthily. Breakfast I have porridge, yoghurt and fruit w/ green tea and g juice. Lunch I have a bowl of bran flakes with some fruit sugar and for dinner I'll have what my parents eat eg. fish, chicken, veg, pasta. I also drink water throughout the day. I run 4-5 times a week , 3 miles a day (only in the holidays) I do hockey and also dance. I'm quite muscular, have a bony neck/chest and pretty toned legs but I'm having a problem with my stomach, hips, and the bottom half of my back. Whilst in Holland i'm going to be swimming and so many people have told me how skinny I look and I still want them to think that. I have a little pooch and I HATE it , I also have some fat on my hips which I hate as well. Is there ANY way I can get a flat stomach by next week. I'm trying to not eat as much and am having a bowl of branflakes, juice and fruit every day and nothing else. Including running and 200 situps, punches, stretching and squats. Any other tips ? I need serious help because I'm getting VERY upset and I hate myself for it. I wish I could turn back time to when I was at my thinnest but I know I can't . Please help me!

But the fact that you have taken tests and there have been faint lines can be that you are pregnant. Do you have a regular physician? Because you could call them. Even if there is a walk in clinic where you are living you could go there. Planned Parenthood would be a good option seeing as you dont need a doctor, if you look them up and give them a call that would probably help. My laptop has been possessed by a Cyber-Desman?

My computer has acted strangely after I played with a Weegee board that I found mysteriously sitting on top of it. It all started when I tried to download a song from LimeWire. It would often run slower than usual, the pages would scroll by themselves, and there would often be no sound. When I used the computer while I had my mask on, I noticed that my computer was possessed by a demon beast called the cyber-desman. The cyber-desman was made to corrupt and delete important files, trick me into listening to bad music by rating songs by itself, and steal my identity to send all my money to the company that sent it. I contacted the company and they tell me that I can exorcise my computer by submerging it under boiling water to drown the cyber-desman and save my laptop, but a neighbor said that I should beat the laptop to delete the cyber-desman until I can see the internal hardware. I know that my neighbor is wrong since he used the same advise for my goldfish, but I think that the company that sent the cyber-desman would be correct since they are the ones who created it. I am wondering whether anyone here knows how long I should boil my laptop to in order to save it. I appreciate your help.

Canon Rebel XT Problems.?

Acer laptop display problems?

the other day while I was using my laptop and the display flickered and then the bottom 2/3 of the screen went grey and I can not see anything underneath the grey portion. When I connect an external display, the external display works fine. If Ido something that causes the laptop display to have to cut off and then back on, the display is fine for a split second then it goes grey on the bottom 2/3 again. Is there anything that I can do to repair this myself? The laptop is only 24 days old.

Infant scoliosis possibly?

i just got the results for my 2 1/2 month old's xrays, and turns out she has a 5 degree curve. they're not saying its scoliosis yet since supposedly that requires a 10 degree curve, but shes always turned to the left which is making her back curve more and more. were gonna start her on pysical therapy this coming week while our appointment with the pediatric spinal specialist approaches, have any of you had a baby with any curve or scoliosis? if so, what was the outcome? when and how did u start noticing? is therapy going to be painul for her? what are the long term side effects of this? if it was years ago, is it completely gone or is it still noticeable? i have been doing research from the minute i got the results, but i wanna hear personal experiences please. thank you.

do you get on from the ground or mounting block? I have never mounted that way could be she is trying to tell you that you are doing it wrong. I always stand at the left shoulder with my left shoulder to her (facing her rump) and holding the reins in the left hand use the right hand to put my left foot in the stirrup (if the horse is tall) then holding mane swing up and around on their back. You get more more momentum this way and pull less on the saddle. Don't know if this will help you but hope it does.

What softball position does this player fit into?

I am an istant coach for a women's fastpitch team at a D3 college. We have two very athletic players one who has a great arm, great glove, and she is fast. The other girl is very fast, has a good glove and a not so good arm. Right now the first girl I mentioned is playing right field and has made some steller outs by picking up a ground ball and firing it to 1st. She is our best and most athletic outfielder and she's only about a half step slower than the other girl. The other girl I mentioned is playing center field and she's playing that position good too although she does have some mental stability issues and I'm not sure she can handle center field. This center fielder played right field last year and our current right fielder sat on the bench all of last year. The first girl that I mentioned has shown a dramatic amount of improvement this year which is why she is starting and I have no doubt in her ability to make every play that comes to her. She is very confident and aggressive and our current center fielder doesn't go as hard, she's more cautious. My question is should we keep the better player in right so she can make those key outs at first base or should we move her to center where she will get a lot more action?

I am a senior in high school and I am 18. I have taken life science, biology, and physics.This year I am taking anatomy/physiology at my school and next semester I am taking "Medical Nursing Careers Internship" it is an ROP and we will be interning at a hospital. I could also take "Medical Terminology" ROP, but it is on the same days as the internship and it is an hour after the other one ends.. I will be going to community college next year and I plan to take all the prerequisites to get into the nursing program at community college the following year. Why Indian(Asian-one, India ) womens looks Caucasian but mtdna is Asian?

There was probably ethnic mixing at some point, so the general features of Indian people look more caucasian. They are "technically" considered caucasian in the US. Even though the MTdna is asian, possibly the tribes that migrated to India were slightly different than the ones that migrated to east asian countries. I think the general body structure is more similar to asian, but the facial features are more caucasian.
