Where to live near Arlington, VA?

I'm thinking about taking a job in Arlington, VA. I'm moving from Buffalo, NY so my cost of living is fairly low here. Where is a nice area to live within an hour commute from Arlington that won't crush me on the change in cost of living? My wife and I have a one year old and prefer a country setting that isn't far away from things to do.
