How do atheists react to bereavement of a loved one?

I think that some people get so stressed out by losing someone that they fill the void with something that will make them feel better temporarily like religion. But most people i know who dont believe in a god including myself are sad when someone dies but the person stops existing so they are in a better calmer place so whats to pray about? And turning to a "god" to pray to doesnt inherently mean they believe its just like when you get really sick and a doctor says there is nothing you can do wouldn't you still try alternative therapies even if you dont believe in them?
